Orchid growing tips should be used as general guidelines. Orchid nurseries can provide a wealth of information. The environmental requirements for each species varies, upon the orchid's native habitat.
Choose a Vanilla Orchid if You Want a Beautiful, Wonderfully Scented Flower , or choose one variety from wild orchids which considered from the most beautifull flowers in the world. Before you start with the plants, research the cultural conditions and how to provide them. Select the plants that will grow in the environment you can supply. In recent years, gardening under lights has become almost a specialty science. Gardening under lights is to create conditions as close as possible to those of the plant's native habitat.
If we grow indoors under lights, the plants may even be healthier than they would be in some greenhouses where lighting may be inconsistent or even sparse. Plants cannot grow unattended indoors. They must rely upon us to supply their basic needs - the correct temperature, moisture, humidity, soil , lighting, air,CO2 etc. Some orchids can be mounted with osmunda fiber on pieces of bark or wood and hung on the wall. Others are grown in pots using various potting mixes, which drain well. The potting mixes are based largely on chopped fir bark, mixed with loose, inert mineral products such as pearlite, vermiculite and charcoal. Bits of osmunda, spaghnum moss, peat and baked clay pellets are also used.
The idea is to have a coarse, friable non-decaying medium that holds moisture with no trace of sogginess and allows free movement of air. Orchids can be grown exclusively under lights ( full spectrum) fluorescent types. We position the lights 4 to 12 inches above the orchids. The distance depends also from the variety of the orchid. We leave the lights from 12 to 16 hours a day depending the time of the year. Many people leave lights 24 hours while in vegetative growth. After this period when they want start the flourishing period they shut of the lights and change the composition of the fertilizer. We water the plants in the morning, twice a week or as needed depending upon the variety. We use a weak solution of fertilizer at every watering. We can apply ydroponic or aeroponic principles to raise our orchids. A good percentage of humidity is around 50 percent. Plants will also benefit from a light misting. A good idea will be to have funs around the clock. The constant breeze make strong plants with resistanse to fungus and other diseases. In case we use Co2 we accelarete the development of our orchids.
